rentvsbuy.in (“we”, “us”, or “our”) is a financial calculator website. Most tools work without an account. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

1. Information we collect

We may collect the following types of information:

Server logs: When you visit the site, standard server logs may record your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, and pages visited.
Account and Profile information: If you create an account, sign-in is handled by Clerk, which processes your credentials according to their privacy policy. We receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Clerk, which are synchronized to your public profile.
Saved calculations: Calculators run entirely in your browser by default. If you are signed in and choose to save a calculation, we store the calculator type, the name you give the saved run, and the input values and results of that run. Depending on the tool, these may include financial figures you entered, such as income, loan amounts, or tax details. We only store this when you explicitly click save.
Split Bill Data: If you use the Split Bill features, we collect details on group creations, transactions, bill divisions, friend list contacts (display names and invited emails), and recorded payments or settlements.
Subscription data: If you purchase a Plus or Premium plan, we store your subscription status, plan type, and billing dates. Payment processing is handled by Razorpay (see Section 5).

2. Calculator & expense tracking data

Most calculator inputs (e.g. Rent vs Buy, Solar, Home Loan) are processed entirely in your browser. No calculation data is sent to our servers unless you explicitly choose to save a calculation run while signed in.

For the **Split Bill** tool, transaction details, shared expenses, group memberships, and peer-to-peer balance ledgers are stored securely in our cloud database to support real-time collaborative balance tracking and group settlements.

3. Data storage

Account data, saved calculations, and subscription records are stored in a hosted cloud database service. Data is stored on servers located in the AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) region and is encrypted at rest and in transit.

4. Local storage & cookies

We store the following in your browser's local storage to improve your experience:

Theme preference (light, dark, or system)
Sidebar collapse state
Other UI preferences that enhance usability

Third-party services such as Google AdSense and Clerk may set their own cookies. See their respective privacy policies for details.

If you install rentvsbuy.in as an app (PWA), a Service Worker is registered in your browser to enable the “Add to Home Screen” installation prompt and to deliver web push notifications for group expense updates. The Service Worker does not cache or store any personal data and does not intercept or modify network responses.

5. Payments

Payments for premium plans are processed by Razorpay. We do not store your credit card numbers, UPI IDs, or bank account details. Razorpay handles all payment information according to PCI DSS standards. We only receive confirmation of successful payments along with a transaction reference.

6. Advertising & Sponsorships

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings or by visiting aboutads.info.

Additionally, we may display direct first-party advertising banners or sponsored content on the site. If you are interested in advertising with us, you can contact us directly.

7. Third-party service providers

We use trusted third-party service providers to help operate our platform. These providers may assist with:

User authentication and account management
Database hosting and cloud infrastructure
Payment processing
Transactional emails and notifications
Website hosting and deployment
Advertising and analytics

These providers process personal information only as necessary to provide their services and in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

8. Data retention & deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you wish to delete your account and all associated data (saved calculations, subscription history), you can request deletion by emailing hello@rentvsbuy.in. We will process deletion requests within 30 days. Note that anonymised, aggregated data may be retained for analytics purposes.

9. Children's privacy

rentvsbuy.in is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@rentvsbuy.in and we will promptly delete the information.

10. Your rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Request correction of inaccurate data
Request deletion of your data
Withdraw consent for data processing
